Tree Stump Grinding – DIY or Hire a Service

There are a number of reasons trees and tree stumps might need removing. It might be a case of being too near a power pole, the roots might be damaging property, it might just not look great, you might have plans for the area of your land, or they might even be a hazard and need to be removed for safety reasons. There are a couple of choices in the removal process, you might choose to do it yourself, or you might consider hiring a professional service. In most cases, calling experts in to take care of it makes the most sense. They have the equipment, can do it far more safely than you can and they have the skills and knowledge to get it done properly. Here is a closer look at the two options.

If you decide to ‘save money’ and do it yourself

The problem with this option is mostly the skill and the equipment. Professional tree stump grinding involves an actual machine called a stump grinder, as well as some other equipment. You will need to buy that equipment or hire it at least. Things you need apart from the gas-powered stump grinder are a shovel or mattock, a drill, a wheelbarrow and a chain saw. Just the grinder will cost at least a couple of thousand, renting you might see costs of around two hundred a day. This is not a project you are likely to get done in just one day so you can expect to pay for 2 or more days in rental costs.

If you have never used one before there is then the additional time of reading the manual and learning how to operate it safely and correctly. After all of that you might find you are still not happy with the job you did, and still have to call in the experts anyway. So now you might have paid for the rental, or purchase, and the cost of the experts on top of that. So much for saving money.

Hiring a professional tree stump grinding service

So hiring professional services sounds on the surface of things to be the more expensive option. But once you consider the above costs of DIY stump grinding and removal, then the cost of hiring experts is not looking so bad. Add into that the safety issues around using equipment you might never have handled, or only rarely, and the hard physical labour involved as well as the time it takes and hiring a professional service is sounding better and better. What you might not know too is that a lot of places will have a larger fee for the first tree stump removal, but if there are others on the property that also need handling, the fee for those might be reduced.

They come with everything they need to get it done, they get it done properly and quickly and they do it, so you don’t have to! No risking your safety near a power pole, spend the time how you want!
